After an intense application process, including providing evidence and supported by both teachers and students, the school’s hard work has paid off as they received the highest accreditation possible.

The Centre of Excellence status is a prestigious national endorsement awarded in conjunction with the secondary geography Quality Mark. It recognises secondary school geography departments that demonstrate exceptional leadership and high standards of teaching and learning.

Emma Worthington, geographer and curriculum team leader for humanities at Les Beaucamps, said she had always had a love and passion for the world around her.

She studied geography at A-level and university, then progressed to a graduate scheme at the States of Guernsey where she worked in environmental projects.

Following this, she went on to retrain as a geography teacher and this year will mark her 21st year in teaching.

She is also working with teachers and primary schools over Guernsey and St Anne’s School in Alderney, and uses her qualifications when supporting their curriculum development and teaching.

‘In small ways or bigger ways, sometimes a bit of training,’ she said.

The school also runs geography trips locally and in the UK. Its next one will be heading to Iceland where they will learn about thermal power.
