New Iceland store opens in Alderney

ALDERNEY’S new Iceland supermarket attracted a long queue of shoppers for its official opening yesterday morning, with islanders hoping the extra competition would help to bring down the high cost of food on the northern isle.

The new store is situated on the former Old Granite Crusher site next to Braye Harbour. The Alliance Group’s Channel Islands chief operating officer Keiran Poole oversaw the opening and the ribbon was cut by Beth Chapman, a director of local agents Bell & Co, which arranged the lease on the site. Every customer on the first morning received a £5 voucher to spend in the store.

Mr Poole said Iceland planned to bring in an extra delivery of fresh food on Thursdays, on top of the regular cargo boat supply from Poole at the start of each week. ‘This should help us boost sales when normally the shelves are looking empty at the end of the week,’ he said.

Bell & Co managing director Andrew Eggleston, who is also Alderney Chamber of Commerce chairman, said it was the biggest single investment in Alderney business for many years and would increase choice for islanders, as well as creating 10 new jobs.
