Manga artist among visiting authors for Book Week

An award-winning manga artist and a former stand-up comedian are among the acclaimed children’s authors to have visited the island this week as part of the Guille-Alles Library’s annual Book Week.

Former stand-up comedian Ben Davis, children’s author and illustrator Zehra Hicks and manga artist Sonia Leong attended a variety of events this week, both at the library and within schools, giving more than 5,000 children from Reception to Year 9 the opportunity to meet an author.

It was Ms Leong’s second visit to Guernsey, 15 years after her first, and saw her once again deliver a series of talks and workshops to give students a taste of what life is like as a professional comic book creator.

‘It’s been two to three schools a day, pretty much,’ she said. ‘I talk a bit about the work I do, and I also teach them a bit more about anime and manga in general, the whole style, the processes of creating it, what the range looks like and why it looks the way it does. But then I also do practical drawing workshops as well, so I actually get them to draw along with me and draw characters with me.’

Book Week is supported by Collas Crill, whose staff have helped judge school competitions encouraging children to create monsters, design space helpers or draw manga versions of themselves.

‘Book Week is a fantastic opportunity to encourage children to discover the joy of reading and to meet the authors and illustrators behind some of their favourite books,’ said managing partner Gareth Bell.

‘It’s been great to see the creativity and enthusiasm of the children taking part in the competitions.’
