It is understood that the staff member has been suspended from work since Easter. No charges have been brought but it is believed the suspension is linked to an ongoing investigation into various issues at the prison.

The news comes just a week after a senior prison officer appeared in the Magistrate’s Court charged with being concerned in the supply of the Class A drug MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy. A committal hearing is scheduled for December.

The prison has been mired in controversy in the past year, with issues including two deaths in custody and governor John De Carteret stepping down six months ago while an investigation took place into allegations about his conduct. His retirement from the position was announced in August. It was recently announced that John Gormley, a former governor of a jail in Hertfordshire, is taking over the running of the prison on an interim basis for an initial six months.
