The move, which mirrors decisions made by some other parishes, received unanimous support from the committee at its most recent meeting.
‘It’s what’s happened across the island. I think most of the cemeteries now don’t have independent committees,’ said committee president Denise Cohu.
‘It really reflects the difficulty of small volunteer groups that don’t meet that regularly not being able to manage a large cemetery and staff and also adhere to today’s need for health and safety standards with all that entails and, obviously, the liability that involves as well.’
Mrs Cohu said the committee also felt there was ‘money to be saved’ in proceeding with the handover.
She and her members had been encouraged by the successful way in which other parishes had made similar moves in recent years.
‘St Sampson’s would be the nearest in size to the Vale. They have done exactly the same and now operate purely through the douzaine, and it’s gone really, really well.
'St Martin’s parish voted last year for the same thing, and it was supported by the parishioners,’ she said.
Mrs Cohu and her committee will find out whether its own proposal is to be accepted when Vale parishioners gather to vote on the matter at the parish elections meeting on Wednesday 4 November.
