A fresh view needed at Leale’s

It seems inevitable that in just a few weeks, one of the first actions of the new president of the Policy & Resources Committee will be to say to the committee’s chief officer: ‘Can I please see the Leale’s Yard file?’

Box upon box of papers (unless the States is now capable of storing them electronically without burning the joint down) will be produced. And the new committee will learn exactly what spooked its predecessors to pull out of the Leale’s Yard deal.

Its members might find that the reasons to pull out stacked up.

But whatever, it will surely prove to have been an impeccably-timed break in the political cycle to enable a fresh look at a situation that has, for the moment, properly broken down.

The implications should Leale’s Yard eventually progress are massive. It should prompt action over the flooding risk off the Bridge, and potentially start to unlock other areas in the vicinity earmarked for house-building.

And although the Guernsey Development Agency is looking elsewhere to launch its Bridge regeneration programme, it would be an absolute boon for it to understand that progress could be possible at either end of this valuable land.

This one is far too big just to let it go. Fresh eyes on the situation are very much needed.
