Talk about Guernsey becoming part of French holidays in Normandy and Brittany, and even triangulating holidays with St Malo and the world-famous Mont-Saint-Michel, comes across as pretty inspiring.
Particularly if such conversations are being driven by the French authorities themselves.
Even if they are not, the enthusiasm being shown by those prepared to come to Guernsey last week and talk so enthusiastically about these ideas and ambitions, once again reaffirms that Guernsey did the right thing last winter in selecting Brittany Ferries to run the island’s ferry services.
As the ferry company’s CEO said a few weeks ago, the people of the region are loyal to what they see as their ferry service and hope, even expect, to engender a spirit of mutual loyalty.
The response from Guernsey tourism and the Economic Development Committee will now be key to see if these lofty ambitions can become reality. Multi-centre holidays seem modern and a good opportunity, with ferry timings perfect for those French visitors.
The millennium anniversary of the birth of William the Conqueror also creates further opportunities to cement links with Normandy over the next couple of years. Hopefully by the time of that anniversary in 2027 all parties will be clear of their objectives and how to get there.
