I’m sure most readers of the Guernsey Press have at some time said ‘I’ve heard or seen it all now’, and rather late in life, I think I did just recently.
The GP article of 18 July, about the plans for a four-storey building on the site once occupied by the Octopus, reads as though they have already been passed and building would soon begin.
I know there have been one or two letters printed already, opposing such a building and I am not surprised.
The proposal is totally out of keeping with the area, and would stick out like a sore thumb and is almost telling readers not to bother to feel another demonstration is due to oppose it as the site has already been sold for £2.555m.
The last three small paragraphs in the write-up made me think everything is in place, as I can’t see anyone paying such a huge amount for something that might not be passed in the planning process.
The article said: ‘Initial discussions with Planning had indicated that there would be the opportunity to create a multi-storey building on the site.
‘Architectural concept modelling has suggested that the site and its location could accommodate up to four and a half storeys.’
Not ever having written a letter to the GP regarding something I feel so strongly about, I can’t help feeling that this particular deal is done. Just one thing seems to have been missed out – that is where will all the car parking be?
