‘Books provide so many opportunities for a child’s development’

What a joy it was to read the Press articles about the reading competition for very young readers and their families.

The pictures showed only too clearly the value of this activity not only from the book point of view but also as a means of real contact with the children. Books provide so many opportunities for a child’s development and I am always saddened to know that some families do not value books or reading.

The need for communicating from birth through talking to the baby/child, showing pictures, reading to them as well as saying nursery rhymes ensures the imagination is allowed to grow and blossom.

Of course, when one sees so many young ones being pushed facing away from the parent who is on their phone, that does little to assist the proper development of a child. However I have been left smiling on occasions when a parent has been skipping along singing or talking to their offspring.
