Woolnough aims to start his season with a bang

A SEASON that James Woolnough hopes will end in national glory begins in the 'electric' atmosphere of Beau Sejour this weekend.

The Amalgamated Club's big Open Show kicks off the 2014-15 campaign on Saturday night, with a hectic night of 17 bouts lined up against a visiting Western Counties team.

Woolnough will again be one of the star attractions, with his rematch against Polish-born fighter Pawel Augustynik the penultimate bout before Matt Jennings' top-of-the-bill clash.

Augustynik is a former national ABA champion, but lost out to Woolnough at St Pierre Park in January and, since then, the Guernseyman came close to tasting ABA glory himself.

He lost out in the quarter-finals on points in the welterweight category to the eventual champion, a fight that, had it gone differently, would have seen Woolnough qualify for the Commonwealth Games.

'I think that I am good enough to challenge to win the ABAs this year and although that isn't until early in 2015, each and every fight I have before then is a warm-up for that,' Woolnough said.

'Because of the level I am at now, I know that every fight I have is against another tough opponent and I am focused on beating this Polish lad.'
