The point they needed came in their 2-2 draw against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United had to come back from 2-0 down after City scored two goals in quick succession through Laia Aleixandri and Rebecca Knaak.

Grace Clinton pulled one back just before half-time as she headed in Aoife Mannion’s cross, before French forward Melvine Malard calmly slotted the equaliser in front of the Stretford end.

‘It’s massive for us,’ said United captain Le Tissier, who was back in Guernsey on Bank Holiday Monday.

‘The game was so exciting yesterday, our whole season basically was on that game. Going 2-0 down and then having to come back and getting a player sent off – everything happened in that game.

‘But, yeah, it’s huge for us. We’ve got a young team and one we want to keep building and working on all the way to the top, but it’s a great start.'

Le Tissier last played in the Champions League in 2023-24 – her second season at the club after finishing second in the WSL the season before.

Holders United now have an FA Cup final against WSL Champions Chelsea to look forward to.

‘We had such pressure on the games that we’ve just played, but now I think we can really look forward to it,’ said Le Tissier.

‘It’s our third final now in a row and we won it last time so we know how good that feels, we lost it the year before so we also know how awful that feels, so we want to use both of our learnings from those games into this game and try to beat Chelsea.’

Le Tissier has just one WSL game left of her third season at United and has now played more games than she did at Brighton, where she made her debut in the WSL.

She said she has developed ‘massively’ as a player since making the move to United.

‘It was a lot different. Right now I’m still really young and we were playing a different way [at Brighton] and we were trying to fight at the bottom of the table.

‘Now with United, it’s all about looking up and seeing how far we can go, winning the league and playing as high as we can.

‘Obviously there’s more pressure on that and, as I said before, we’ve got a young team, but I’ve developed massively at United under the management and I want to keep improving as well.’

This season also saw the 23-year-old become captain of Manchester United’s women’s team.

‘It’s special. Obviously, when I was when I was playing over here, I never would have thought I would have had the opportunity to captain United and yeah, it’s a special feeling,’ she said.

‘I think beforehand I was probably a bit of a leader on the pitch anyway. Our other captain left the club and obviously Marc [Skinner] gave me that opportunity and it was one I wanted to take with both hands and I’ve been really enjoying it.

‘Leading us out onto the pitch for the first time at Old Trafford was cool, with all my family in the crowd as well. I’ll never forget that moment. We won the game so it was a great start, but that was a very special moment.’

‘Enjoy it’ is Maya’s best bit of advice

Le Tissier, who was in the island with Puma, hosted a training session with some of the island’s young footballers.

‘It’s been so, so special. This is one of the best things I think I’ve done coming back to the island,’ she said.

‘I haven’t really done anything like this before. I sort of just left and played football and went to Brighton, went to United and now I’ve actually been able to come back and with the help of Puma, we’ve been able to put this event on for everyone.

‘It’s really nice to see that as we’re making a difference and hopefully there can be many more people that will come through from my pathway as well.’

After the training session, she held a question-and-answer session with the children. She said her best piece of advice for them was to enjoy their football and keep working hard.

‘I think you can see now that you can do it. Alex [Scott] has done it for the boys, I’ve done it for the girls, so why not work hard and enjoy the football and try and get to the top,’ said Le Tissier.

She added how Guernsey’s new home of football Victoria Park will also be really beneficial for youngsters coming through.

‘It’s incredible the place that you have here down at “Vicky Park”, it’s just amazing having this on the island it will support the youth coming through, boys and girls.

‘I think if I'd had this, I would just be down here every single day having a kickabout. Growing up, I was just playing because I love the game and I hope these guys can do this too.’
