Menorca tests for Sarnian basketballers
THE Guernsey women's basketball team have been handed a tough draw in their quest for another NatWest Island Games medal.
Following their bronze medal in the Isle of Wight four years ago and the absence of a competition in Bermuda in 2013, Pat Ogier's side were the third seeds for yesterday's draw for the Jersey 2015 edition.
However, they were placed in arguably the harder of the two four-team groups alongside defending champions Menorca, Gotland and hosts Jersey.
'It's pretty tough,' said Ogier.
'Menorca have won gold at the last couple of Games where basketball has been held, so we know they are a good side and although Gotland have not played in it since 1999, when they won it, we expect them to be very strong.'
Meanwhile, the Guernsey men's team will come up against Menorca and Faroes in their round-robin with the top two sides in the four three-team groups progressing to the quarter-finals.
'We know Menorca are one of the top sides while Faroes have struggled in previous Games so we feel we can certainly progress into the quarter-finals then see where the draw takes us,' said coach Adam Farish.
