Ferbrache leads the recovery in Gateshead

NIC POTHAS praised his side's new-found resilience after a cracking 83-run over the Northern Universities Select Cricket XI in Gateshead yesterday.

In the first of two 50-over games as part of the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Challenge Series, Jamie Nussbaumer's side overcame early problems on a wicket that was green, soft and, said Pothas, 'not conducive to good one day cricket'.

The GCB director of cricket added: 'It was a massive shift from what Guernsey would have obviously done in the past in these situations.

'The exciting thing is that we were tough. We stuck in.'

The stars of the show were batsmen, Lucas Barker (32), Ben Ferbrache (75not) and Dave Hooper (55) and all the seam bowlers.

Guernsey had been in trouble at 64 for four, this after a solid start given to them by James Wilkes-Green and Matt Stokes (29). Barker and Ferbrache rebuilt the innings, ticking along at three or four per over until a rain break caused an early lunch.

Guernsey were on 122 at that point, but thereafter raised the tempo after the loss of Barker, scoring at virtually 10 an over to the end.

NUSC were soon in trouble at 19 for two and, after a break for rain, Newey, who had already claimed the wicket of one opener, struck with two wickets in as many balls to leave the home side reeling at 36 for four.

NUSC were finally out for 137.
