‘Atrocious’ but Raiders still win

IT WAS another good day for Raiders on Saturday, despite their coach describing his team’s performance as ‘atrocious’.

On a damp day at Footes Lane, it is true that Guernsey made heavy weather of beating Dorking 24-11, but they ground out a crucial bonus-point win while two of their main London & South-East Premier title rivals dropped points as Hertford came from 11-0 down to earn a 14-all draw with Tring.

Barnes capitalised on that result to rise to second in the table with a 97-7 thumping of Southend Saxons, but Raiders have seen their lead increase to six points.

Not that their coach was interested in the immediate aftermath of their latest success, which maintained their unbeaten home record this season.

‘To be honest, our heads should be very down after that game,’ Reynolds said.

‘It was an atrocious effort – we can’t get out of our own half most of the time because people can’t kick a ball properly or we run from our own scrum and then offload it and give them the ball straight back.

‘So we struggled in those areas and I think we just got ahead of ourselves again.’

Raiders made it count when they did have the ball, though, with a penalty try added to the scores of Dan Hill, Sam Whitehead and Cameron Craine.
