Greens heading to Jersey on high after MCC win

Guernsey got a ‘nice confidence-booster’ ahead of next week’s Inter-Insular T20 Series after eventually beating both the weather and the MCC.

Travel delays had prevented the two sides in facing off as scheduled on Monday, with that fixture then rearranged for Tuesday evening at the College Field only for the second attempt to be abandoned due to rain.

However, Wednesday evening’s T20 clash went ahead at a bright and breezy KGV with the hosts successfully defending 140 as they bowled the tourists out in the final over to win by 13 runs.

‘Really pleased, I thought the boys did really well in all aspects,’ said Guernsey’s director of cricket Jeremy Frith on the performance.

‘It’s a nice confidence-booster ahead of going to Jersey and it is nice to be back playing together after a few weeks.’

Several of the Island batters made starts, but the majority of their runs came from top-scorer Matt Stokes (37), wicketkeeper-batter Charlie Simmonds (22) and a valuable contribution from Ben Ferbrache (33).

A seven-an-over target looked to be well within reach of the MCC, who had Guernsey squad members Zak Damarell and Martin-Dale Bradley in their XI, but a flurry of early wickets put the Greens in the box seat and they went on to win the match convincingly despite some clean hitting from the lower order.

Left-arm seamer Ryan Levy claimed three wickets for the hosts, while there were two apiece for Charlie Forshaw, Josh Butler and Stokes with Adam Martel picking up one.

‘The guys thought about 150 was a par score, so we were a little bit under that, but I thought particularly in overs seven to 20 we batted well,’ said Frith, who added that period has been a focus for the side recently.

‘We know that if we can go well in the powerplay, then work well from overs seven to 18 and then go big in the last two, we will post a big score.

‘Stokesy batted well, Simmo ran really well between the wickets and Ferby played well too.

‘With the ball, if you get wickets up front and get good batters out early, you are always going to be in with a shout and so to take four wickets in the powerplay was very pleasing.’

Focus turns to the new-look GCA Cup tomorrow when the KGV will host a T20 double-header as Cobo face back-to-back matches, the first against Griffins at 11am and the second versus Wanderers-Irregulars at 3.30pm.

‘It is good to keep people playing competitive cricket with the Inter-Insular Series coming up and the ICC tournament [the Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Regional Final] just around the corner,’ Frith said.
