With all three sides in with a realistic chance of making the Island Team Scratch League final going into Monday’s concluding round-robin match when La Grande Mare Douit Dodgers enjoyed home advantage against the L’Ancresse Martellos, expectations were for a nerve-racking finale for all involved.
As it turned out, the Martellos showed their strength in beating their hosts by an even greater margin than their earlier record-breaking effort this season to reach the final for the first time.
While the ‘Double Ds’ are renowned for their fighting spirit, on this occasion it only served to delay the inevitable as their visitors took control of the evening from an early stage.
The Martellos needed just six points from the overall match to guarantee their spot in the top two of the table, largely thanks to their 19-2 victory over the same opponents at L’Ancresse last month.
By the time the two foursomes rubbers had made it through the turn this time around with both L’Ancresse pairs leading 4 up after 10 holes, a repeat was on the cards and the hosts were resigned to their fate.
Martellos emerged 20-2 winners and now host the Royals in the final on Monday 20 August.
