Guernsey inflict a second whitewash in two years

ONLY last year the island second string completed their first RSL whitewash – and now they have done it again.

Guernsey blitzed Jersey 27-0 to seal the inter-insular hardware again in another impressive showing at the Rohais Badminton Halls.

Guernsey Badminton Association development officer Matt Haynes was pleased to see his side succeed in every single women’s, men’s and mixed clash, although five went to a decider.

‘We had a fairly strong but slightly younger team than we did last year – last year was 30-0 so we got another whitewash,’ he said.

‘Everybody performed to a great level, winning all their games, although there were a couple of games that could have gone either way on another day and went into the third set.

‘At the end of the day, I think it was a bit of extra experience that got us there.’

Captain Steph Stuart lifted the individual trophy for the Sarnians but there were only about 10 points apiece between her, Renee Cotterill, Fran Babbe and Anika Penney in the tightly-contested rankings.

Additionally, young David Trebert upgraded from a reserve to a full-timer this year while Alex Tapp added a further shade of youth to the development side.
