‘Not a bad night’s work,’ he quipped after in the first frame of a Team Handicap match against Gremlin Buccaneers’ at the RAFA Club against a helpless Pat Le Gallez, Desperques compiled a sensational 143 total clearance – his 59th competitive century break and ninth ton of the season.

Last Thursday he compiled a 139 clearance to better Adam Shorto’s Island record, but he did not realise he was on to improve on that effort until he reached the colours.

He had already potted five or six reds when he went slightly out of position and was forced into taking two blues rather than blacks which would have been needed for a maximum 147.

‘It was a kind of a strange situation because I was in the zone and didn’t start really thinking about my score until there were two or three reds left.

‘It was only when I was left with the colours that I added up what was available.’

Desperques, who plays Dave Bullock in the Island billiards final tonight, said that his consistently good form this campaign is not down to extra work on the tables.

‘I haven’t been practising as much as I should do, to be honest.’
