As a debutant to the senior World Championships level, Chalmers would certainly have not been wanting to be drawn into the fastest heat and dunked in the tight lane one.
But that was his reality and he had to battle to the line, with an unfortunate touch of fatigue over the last barrier leading to him finishing just outside the automatic qualifiers in 49.37sec.
However, that time would have won or placed in the other heats, and sure enough it went down as the fastest non-automatic qualifier of the day.
‘I knew it was going to be probably one of the hardest heats out there today, especially in lane one, but I ran my race, came in strong and that was all I could ask for,’ he said afterwards.
