GFC watching other results ahead of Southall visit

Guernsey FC’s fate could become clearer before they even kick a ball this weekend.

The Green Lions are not in action until tomorrow when Southall are the second Isthmian South Central visitors to Victoria Park, by which time all other clubs in the division will have ticked off another fixture this afternoon.

GFC start the weekend four points from safety, but that gap could be even more once they step onto the pitch tomorrow with the Metropolitan Police, who are the side immediately above the relegation zone, facing bottom side Badshot Lea today.

‘That’s the position we’re in, it’s out of our hands,’ said GFC manager Tony Vance.

‘If the results go a certain way, you could say we’re done for, but it certain makes it an interesting Saturday and, hopefully, interesting Sunday.

‘We cannot predict what is going to happen. With promotion and relegation in our league, we never really have any “nothing” games as there’s always something to play for and I enjoy that. That’s what I’ve signed up for, what the players have signed up for and why GFC was created.

‘We have faced all scenarios over the years – when we were winning a lot, promotions, play-offs, cup finals, relegation battles, backs-to-the-wall scraps – and I feel I’ve been very fortunate to have been part of it all.’

GFC will be missing Tom Vaudin tomorrow after he picked up a knock last week, which Vance does not want to aggravate, but otherwise it should be a full squad to choose from to take on 14th-placed Southall.

‘We are going to have to go toe-to-toe with them,’ said Vance.

‘When they are on it, they’re hot, but they have had some mixed results. They were in and around the play-offs last season and they have probably not had a season that justifies their ability this time.

‘It is not going to be an easy game, from far it, but hopefully it will be an entertaining game.

‘From our point of view, we are looking for a shift in momentum in terms of how we play, so we can attack this final part of the season.

‘Often this time of the year is more about damage limitation to get through to the Muratti, but we have to try and end our season on a positive note and then there’s the small detail of having a wonderful new facility to play at which is a great venue for people to come watch and we want to do it justice.’

GFC against Southall kicks off at 2pm tomorrow. Victoria Avenue will be closed to public traffic an hour before kick off with supporters once again encouraged to make use of sustainable travel options.
