They lifted the trophy after their double header at Victoria Park on Saturday.

‘I’m really pleased with what we’ve done over the season, so it’s great to be lifting the trophy today, it’s going to be a really good feeling for all the girls that have been involved,’ said GFC Women’s manager Anna Gauvain.

The Green Lionesses are undefeated in their first-ever league campaign and Gauvain said the squad has grown in ability, as well as size, over the course of the season and winning the title has put them in a good position going forward.

‘I think we’ve kept challenging them all and it just shows today that we’re able to make changes and keep the game competitive, so we are using 16 now and then more players again later. The whole squad has just grown and grown in ability, which is really pleasing,’ said Gauvain, speaking after their first game on Saturday.

‘I think it just keeps everyone wanting more, once you go and achieve something, then you always think about what’s next and that’s important for us that we’ve got something hopefully in the pipeline.’

Going into Saturday’s games against Rozel Rovers and Jersey Wanderers they needed only one point to secure the title, which they managed to take away from their first game.

The Green Lionesses dropped points for the first time this season against their closest challengers Rozel Rovers after Emily Le Page scored a late equaliser for the visitors in the first minute of added time.

Rozel, who sit second in the table, did well against the new champions, but it was the Green Lionesses who started the brighter of the two sides.

Elise Le Lacheur did some good work down the right wing and got a shot away in the seventh minute which was stopped by Rozel goalkeeper Tayah Vasse.

Rozel defended well, though, and made it a challenge for the Green Lionesses who were putting the pressure on their opponents.

It could have been more for GFC as they had a handful of good chances.

In the 18th minute an opportunity came for Chloe Ingrouille, who was near the post to tap in after a loose ball in the area fell to her, but Vasse did well to keep it out, and minutes later Scarlett Gallagher took a good shot from the edge of the box but hit the post.

Candice Bougourd was the first Guernsey FC woman to score at Victoria Park, from a free kick, and her left-footed effort from just outside the penalty area hit the back of the net in the 22nd minute.

Come the second half, Rozel had started putting more pressure on the Green Lionesses in the closing stages, and it looked as though it would only be a matter of time before they found their equaliser.

As well as being their title-clinching match, their match against Rozel was also the Green Lionesses first at Victoria Park.

‘There was a lot of excitement definitely, and for us all to be involved out there in front of a decent crowd was great. It’s now getting used to the surface and being out here – it’s a really special place,’ said Gauvain.

It was a different story when Guernsey played Jersey Wanderers later in the day.

The Green Lionesses went into the second half of their second match 2-0 up after Gracia van Zupthen scored a first-half brace. The player of the match then went on to score another three goals in the second half before Jessie Staples turned in an in-swinging corner on 82 minutes, making it 6-0.

Chloe Ingrouille made it seven with a good finish after a great run towards the penalty area.

In the 91st minute, Calleigh Hedley got on the scoresheet in her first appearance of the day with a neat finish from close range with the final kick of the game.

The new Jersey Combination Women’s League champions have one more game left this season, at Victoria Park, on Saturday 26 April.
