The Green Lions started off well, and were the better side for much of the game. New opponents Wick had some moments where they looked dangerous, but nothing that caused Josh Addison or Guernsey’s defence too much trouble.

There were some good opportunities for Guernsey early on, one of the best was for Fin Du Port with a powerful shot from 30 yards out, but his effort was punched away by Wick goalkeeper Keelan Belcher.

Guernsey went close again 12 minutes in as Ross Allen crossed in Brandon Wallace’s free-kick down the left to Jacob Fallaize who was waiting at the far post, but his header was off target.

It was Fallaize’s central defensive partner who gave his side the lead on the half-hour mark, when Tom Vaudin marked his 100th appearance with his first goal for the club and Guernsey FC’s 1,000th league goal.

Charlton Gauvain’s corner into the area was met by Allen who hooked the ball towards the far post and it was knocked in by the Guernsey defender from close range.

Three minutes later Guernsey won a free-kick just inside the right touchline. Du Port met Charlton Gauvain’s free-kick and headed home to double their lead.

Guernsey could have gone for one more before the break as Wallace squared from the left which was met by a scramble of Guernsey bodies around the goal line with Belcher doing well to keep the ball out.

Wick also had their best shot of the half in stoppage time as Dave Crouch fired in a decent effort but it was saved well by Addison.

Guernsey carried on taking the game to their opponents after the break and created a number of decent chances, including Allen curling an effort on to the bar just before the hour mark. Wick’s Charlie Robinson was quick to clear any danger from a follow-up.

Surprisingly Wick pulled a goal back on 62 minutes when Crouch met Matt Whitehead’s cross, took a second to control it before hitting a great strike into the top left.

In the 66th minute substitute Callum Le Lacheur picked out an unmarked Sam Murray but Belcher put an arm out to stop his effort – the rebound fell to Allen but he dragged his shot wide.

Murray then hit the outside of the post after a good run down the left before he finally got the goal he deserved in the 87th minute, and made the game safe, with a fine strike in to the bottom corner.

In stoppage time Will Fazakerley won a penalty after being tripped in the area. Allen stepped up to take it and converted into the top right of the net, sending the keeper the wrong way.

A bad tempered finish to the game after the final whistle saw yellow and red cards issued to the visitors.

The Green Lions are back in action in the league on Tuesday evening away at Seaford Town.
