Guernsey FC left it late but they picked up a vital away win on Saturday to close in on the Southern Combination Premier Division play-off places.

As the clock ticked into injury time at Peacehaven & Telscombe, with neither side having been able to make a breakthrough in the 90 minutes, the in-form Sam Murray was in the right place at the right time to latch on to Will Fazakerley’s flick on of Josh Addison’s long ball forward, shrug off a defender and slot past the home goalkeeper to snatch a 1-0 victory and all three points.

The result, which came on a day when flight delays saw kick-off put back by an hour before the Green Lions were forced into a late reshuffle after Jacob Fallaize pulled out, having been named in the starting XI, means GFC climb to seventh in the table, just one point outside the play-off places with games in hand on all the sides above them.

‘We were under the cosh a little bit in the first half, we had to tweak a few things, but Josh made a few outstanding saves so I think the clean sheet is one for him really,’ said club captain Jamie Dodd.

‘We brought Faz on in the end, [went] a bit more direct and it paid dividends with the goal.

‘We just had to stay in the game rather than go a bit more gung-ho and it paid its reward in the end.

‘The team worked really hard... we had to stay disciplined and we knew we’d get a chance to win the game.’
