Maiden strikes Hampshire gold in 1500m freestyle

Zach Maiden was crowned an age-group county champion amid a stream of impressive Barracudas performances at the Hampshire Championships’ long-distance weekend.

A total of eight swimmers represented the club at the event in Winchester, which is one of three different weekends making up the championships.

For several of the younger swimmers, this event provided a valuable learning opportunity, particularly as it was their first time competing in long-distance races in a 50m pool.

The men’s 800m freestyle event featured a highly competitive race between Henry Bolton and Maiden, with both swimmers remaining closely-matched throughout.

Ultimately, Maiden edged out his teammate by just over 1sec. to secure second place in the 15-year-old age group to Bolton’s third.

In the 1500m, both swimmers performed outstandingly.

Maiden claimed the Hampshire county title in 17min. 40.41sec., winning by more than 7sec., while Bolton achieved a commendable fourth-place finish.

Megan Carter also took on both the 800m and 1500m freestyle events.

Swimming in the 15-year old age group, she delivered consistent performances, placing fifth in both distances.

Over 800m freestyle, Lotte Bolton finished 10th in the 13-year old age group.

The Barracudas medal tally was further added to by 11-year-old Albie Sarre, who took home a bronze in the 400m freestyle.

Also swimming in the 400m freestyle was Caelan Osborough, Thea Maiden and Phoebe Sebire.

Impressively, each swimmer achieved a new personal best in this event.

Osborough finished 11th in the 13-year age group, while in the 12-year age group, Maiden secured ninth and Sebire seventh.

In addition, Osborough also competed in the 400m individual medley, where

he improved his PB and finished 10th overall.
