Despite overcoming the team at the top of the table 3-1 on Saturday afternoon, GFC manager Tony Vance remained realistic at full time about where his side will end the season.
‘We’re not going to win a league. If we’d won last week, then it could have been maybe, but ultimately nothing has changed from my point of view,’ he said.
‘We need to keep going. We’re in the running now, I’m not going to say we’ve managed to achieve our destiny of the play-offs – we’ve got to get there, but also we want to have home advantage, and I think today proves why we need home advantage, so that’s purely what we’re trying to achieve here.’
Sam Murray and Ross Allen, who netted a brace, both got on the scoresheet in Saturday afternoon’s impressive victory, which was an excellent performance all round.
‘I think it was brilliant, it had everything you want,’ Vance said.
‘First half, we were so dominant they couldn’t get out. We were winning second balls, we were on them like a rash, and we could have scored more goals, but I thought our defensive line and everything about the performance in the first half is exactly how we want to play and this is against a top team who were flying high.
‘Second half, we had to dig in when they came at us, which obviously they’re going to do, and then you lose Jacob [Fallaize] and people like that.
‘It was great to hang on, but we had chances as well, and we were a threat going forward, so they had a proper game against us today.’
The result sees the third-placed Green Lions move to within five points of Haywards Heath, who dropped to second with Steyning Town returning to the top after their 2-0 home win over Forest Row.
Peacehaven & Telscombe are a point behind GFC in fourth after they thumped Wick 5-1 while Horsham YM are a further three points back after suffering a 1-0 defeat away at Eastbourne United.
