Ala targeting sub-48sec. at ‘home’ Diamond League

Alastair Chalmers has marked next month’s London Diamond League as his big opportunity for that personal best and perhaps even British record.

Fresh from an unforgettable UK Championships weekend, where he celebrated victory on Father’s Day with newborn son Robert, the 400m hurdles star now has a month to prepare for his Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games medal bid.

But he is set to be in home action one more time beforehand for the Novuna London Athletics Meet on Saturday 18 July, where he lines up with hurdling heroes like Karsten Warholm in a golden opportunity to excel against the clock.

‘That is the fastest track in the world,’ the 26-year-old said.

‘And the stadium’s always sold out, it’s an absolute vibe in there and Warholm, all those world record-holders, all that, are going to be there.

‘So that’s probably the best chance for me to go run a good time.’

Chalmers last competed at the single-day spectacle in 2024 but could not find his best form due to Covid.

After his most consistently strong start to any season yet, he is now hoping for that breakthrough and to test Kriss Akabusi’s long-standing mark of 47.82sec.

‘To run 47sec. is a very rare thing,’ he added.

‘I know I’m capable of doing it.

‘I’ve just got to get the right race and the right environment to do it. And I definitely think that come London, I can go 47sec.

‘We’ll see how it goes.’

He underlined the event’s position in his Glasgow 2026 preparation, adding: ‘It will give me a lot of confidence if I run well going into the Commonwealth Games, which is of course a massive, massive goal of mine as well, to get another medal for Guernsey.’

He has already proven himself against some of the best globally in winning his first Continental Tour Gold event – just one level below Diamond League – in Poland.

‘To win the Bydgoszcz Gold Tour is pretty special.

‘These Gold Tours in the 400m hurdles are pretty intense to win and it was a pretty stacked race as well.

‘So very happy to get a rare win on a high level-competition.’

Chalmers described the weekend just gone at the UK Championships as ‘very emotional’.

He left for the heats in Birmingham without fiancee Ellie Bell and their newborn, but they were there for the final, and he admitted he probably could not have raced without them.

‘For my son’s first race to be of his dad winning a national title is pretty cool.

‘And to get him on the track and her to be there, it was awesome.

‘I couldn’t have lost that race. It was on Father’s Day. It was written in the stars, all of it.

‘But I think a few of the boys definitely thought they could get me.

‘So it was good to put my chest out and kind of show them who the real king is.’
