There was plenty to admire from more than 40 youngsters who took to the L’Ancresse Links, both in terms of skill and temperament as they made the most of the glorious conditions to produce some outstanding scores with the prizes shared almost evenly between home players and those from Royal Jersey.
RGGC organisers scheduled their annual clash with the RJGC Juniors for Tuesday so that the visitors could enjoy an overnight stay and also participate in the prestigious individual event the following day, with Callum McConnell making the most of the opportunity by emerging victorious in the Junior Open. He accumulated an impressive 43 Stableford points with 11 pars in his round and a birdie three at the fourth being the highlight.
Second prize went to home player Hugo Powell who finished very strongly with a string of pars to make 41 points and pip Royal Jersey’s Oliver Vacher, who carded birdies at the fifth and 12th, on countback.
Luke Adcock, whose birdie two on the tough 12th was the highlight of his round, and fellow RGGC player Felix Marshall, who had a great run of three birdies in four holes on the back nine and came within a whisker of holing out for an eagle on the 13th, completed the top five on 39 points.
The trio who made up the remainder of the top eight – Jack Burchell, Charlie-Ray Baker and Oliver Brown – all amassed 38 points and Brown also added the nearest-the-pin prize on the 18th with a distance of 9ft 4in.
There was home success in the scratch standings as Harry Ingrouille came out on top with an excellent 70 gross for 36 points.
After starting his round with a couple of fives, he then played the next 13 holes in three-under par with birdies coming on both par fives, the sixth and 14th, as well as the 15th.
His only dropped shot of the back nine came on 16 before he finished with back-to-back pars.
In the red tee competition, the top two both finished with an excellent score of 40 points as George Cavendish from Royal Jersey edged Royal Guernsey’s Erin McKenna to first prize on countback.
Visitors Torin Ruark and Chloe Cosnett completed the prizewinners with 35 and 34 points respectively.
