Guernsey FC announced on Friday night that the team would not be travelling due to flight disruption caused by the storm, and on Saturday both Sylvans’ clash with Jersey Wanderers and St Martin’s tie against St Clement were called off mid-morning.
Both Jersey teams decided not to travel on a flight delayed more than an hour due to potential disruption to their return flight.
‘When games are called off at short notice, it does become difficult, and we need clubs to be as as accommodating as possible, both the host teams and also the away teams travelling – travel isn’t easy these days,’ said Guernsey Football League Management chairman Andy Robert.
‘At first-team level, rescheduling games can be quite challenging. We’ve done a little bit of structuring with fixtures at Priaulx level, we’ve got the use of Victoria Park, obviously, and we can fit that around the GFA and GFC games, and this season we have programmed one round of Priaulx fixtures there, so that helps in terms of we’re not getting a lot of games in a short space of time.’
The two Jeremie Cup games were initially moved to Victoria Park and the KGV 3G due to the storm.
The postponements mean that the first teams of both clubs will now go three weekends without a competitive match and have another game to fit into an already-busy schedule.
‘It’s always tough in conditions like this,’ said Saints head coach Ben Hunter.
‘You can’t blame blame St Clement or Aurigny, so it’s always one of those hard things.
‘Having to move to KGV wasn’t ideal for us, so in a way it’s a good thing for us that we get to play at home again, but frustratingly, it’s another weekend without football.
‘It’s a positive that we get to get on the training pitch, do some fitness work, and we can work some things out.
‘But it’s frustrating you lose momentum in playing as we’ve had a good couple of results the last few weeks.
‘Now it’s trying to fit in another game.
‘It’s going to have to be a weekend, trying to find a weekend when we don’t have games is going to be a tough one trying to fit it in.
‘It’s just another thing we don’t really need, but we’ll take it on the chin and go with what we have to do.’
