‘Fun and affordable’ - Renault 5 test drive

One of the most highly anticipated car launches of the year, the Renault 5 has finally reached the showrooms.

The car feels extremely well-priced, practical for Guernsey and overall it was a really fun car to drive, says Lucy Rouget.

With its striking range of colours, the vehicle which took the market by storm in the 70s and 80s has been reinvented into a fully electric model for the modern era.

This stylish, versatile and funky yet affordable car starts from £21,000 and has plenty of references to the original model.

The attractive retro-inspired interior and fabric covered dashboard have been integrated with modern comforts, including heated seats and digital screens.

Rear lights and a fake vent on the side are an ode to the original Renault 5 turbo where the air went through the engine and out of the side by the lights, along with the battery indicator on the bonnet.

The pop yellow colour of the model we took out around Guernsey for the morning definitely caught the attention of other drivers, who couldn’t help but stare as we zoomed past.

It’s small size yet spacious cabin made it well-suited to driving around the island.

It is slightly smaller than the award-winning Renault Clio, but still has five doors, five seats and a generously sized boot.

The 10-inch infotainment screen takes care of all navigating music and charging and has a new ‘hey Renault’ feature.

Using AI, the feature can control the temperatures, navigation, locating the nearest charging stations and more with the verbal cue. Plus if you tease it gently it’ll give you back some banter and is a fun feature to play with.

With its nostalgic feel with a modern twist, it’s understandable why it was named What Car? 2025 Car of the Year award.

A tight turning circle and light but accurate steering makes it well-suited to driving around the island in tight lanes and coastal roads.

Smaller, less noticeable details show the thought that Renault has taken with this model.

The wheels have 12 spokes, and the five for Renault 5 appears at 5 o’clock.

With a range of customisable features, colours and finishes, you can really make this car your own.

The car feels extremely well-priced, practical for Guernsey and overall it was a really fun car to drive.

The new Renault 5 is available to test drive now at Freelance Guernsey.
