'Mother of ugly' hotel condemned

DESIGNS for a multi-million pound, five-star hotel at the former Idlerocks site have been attacked by islanders with one St Martin's parishioner describing it as a 'Spanish-looking concrete jungle'.

The plans for the £20m. makeover of the derelict fire-ravaged site were unveiled this weekend.

But many believe the architects have got it wrong with the appearance of the proposed 35-bedroom hotel, which would include a spa and a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Other unhappy islanders have compared the scheduled green building to looking like a German bunker or a prison while others have labelled it 'hideous' and a 'monstrosity'.

Among the critics was Housing minister Dave Jones, who referred to the planned hotel as a 'Lego building'. 'I think this looks hideous,' he said.

'The seaward side looks like a German observation tower. The trouble is, modern architecture doesn't seem to be very imaginative at all.'

St Martin's resident Sandra Farell, 66, did not only dislike the design but also the intention for the building to be a hotel. 'I don't think it's a good idea as the tourism industry is going down a lot,' she said. 'There are more important things to deal with than luxury hotels.

'This looks like something from the middle of Spain – somewhere with a concrete jungle.'
