Geomarine appointed to carry out work on Castle bridge

Guernsey Ports has finally appointed a contractor to carry out the reconstruction of the bridge to Castle Cornet, almost a year to the day after it first began the search for a firm to complete the planned redevelopment.

The bridge has been known to need repairs for some time, with Guernsey Ports first announcing a search for a contractor in December 2024

Local firm Geomarine was chosen following a competitive tender.

It will be starting its main demolition work at the end of next summer, and aiming to reconstruct the bridge’s main structure in advance of the 2027 summer season.

‘The reconstruction of the bridge is essential to secure long-term public access, so we are pleased to see the project progressing on schedule and the works planned for outside the main visitor season, which safeguards our busiest months,’ said head of culture and heritage services Helen Glencross.

The reconstruction is projected to cost £6.2m., including the construction, design and additional project costs, and which is within the £7m. budget agreed by the States last year.

The project will involve the demolition of the concrete deck of the 95m-long bridge, as well as the small bridge branching off to lead to the castle itself. The granite piers, from the 1800s structure, will be reinforced and retained, having been determined to be still in good condition.

The bridge has been known to need repairs for some time, with Guernsey Ports first announcing a search for a contractor in December 2024. Vehicle access to the bridge has been banned since 2023.

Conditional planning permission has already been secured for the bridge reconstruction, and preliminary works will begin in the coming months.

They are not expected to impact public access this summer.
