Donkey statue plan rears its head again

PLANS for a 12ft sculpture of a kicking Guernsey donkey in St Peter Port harbour have been unveiled.

The proposal for the cast bronze statue has been submitted more than 14 years after the idea was first suggested.

Geoff and Jennie Dorey are again leading the project in the form of a non-profit company called Guernsey Donkey LBG.

The couple feel the traditional symbol of islanders is now more popular than ever.

If approved, the kicking donkey will be mounted on top of a granite column that would be secured to the sea bed to the north-east of Castle Cornet.

Its head will face out to sea and kick up to Salerie Corner – to avoid any negative conotation with the old Guernsey postcard of a donkey kicking a German, as well as to not look unwelcoming to visitors.

The concept came about on a visit to Denmark when Mrs Dorey saw Copenhagen's Little Mermaid.
