Michelle Bougourd, 48, was speaking after the launch of an investigation into on-island ante-natal scans.

The investigation, which is understood to be looking at scans of at least 50 babies, was sparked by claims that a baby was recently born unexpectedly with Down's syndrome.

Mrs Bougourd's six-year-old daughter, Georgie, was not diagnosed with Down's syndrome until she was three-and-a-half months old.

'I was told, because of my age, there was a slightly higher risk but during my nuchal scan, her condition was not picked up,' she said.

'I am pleased Georgie's condition was not diagnosed during pregnancy as I would have concentrated on the diagnosis rather than the person inside.

'Georgie is my gorgeous little girl who happens to have Down's syndrome and not a little Down's syndrome girl called Georgie –and believe me, there is a big difference.'
