Post office returning to Commercial Arcade site

Number 7, Commercial Arcade has stood empty since the Co-op moved its pharmacy in February.

The pharmacy, which was moving inside the Market Buildings to the site of former post office counter, had been based on the corner of the Arcade for more than decade.

A post office, which moved out of 7, Commercial Arcade in January 2003 to move to a new branch in the then new market buildings, is now set to open on the site again.

Guernsey Post chief executive Steve Sheridan said this was the right space.

‘We are looking forward to returning to Commercial Arcade, a location with historical ties to the Post Office and a strong central position in Town,’ he said.

‘This new site allows us to provide our full range of services in a more permanent and customer-friendly location. We look forward to welcoming customers into a refreshed space that reflects the evolving needs of our community.’

The move comes as Guernsey Post has been rationalising its sites around Town.

It closed in Smith Street in 2021, with services moved to the counter in the Co-op Market building. It was proposed this would become the main post office in Town. But in April 2024 that counter closed, with services moved to the Guernsey Information Centre, which used to be home of its bureau de change operation.

Now, the Guernsey Information Centre is being repurposed as the Victor Hugo Centre, and postal services are on the move again, this time back to the Commercial Arcade. The relocation will take place in early July.

It will mean that foreign currency services will again be offered in Town. There will also be a range of gifts, stamp collectibles, and a small postal museum.

The four-storey building, along with its basement, has three levels for retail, totalling more than 1,000 sq. ft of space.

The new Commercial Arcade branch will include Saturday opening hours.

Customers with a PO Box at North Plantation can relocate to Envoy House or the new Town Post Office. EBox customers will have their collection point moved to the Guille-Alles Library.
