Trident would 'go with flow' on steps

HERM Travel Trident would be happy to return to docking at the Cambridge Steps if Guernsey Harbours decided to move cruise ship passenger landings back to the Inter-Island Quay, its managing director has said.

However, Peter Wilcox has warned there would be issues with the number of people trying to use the quay when the steps were unavailable at low spring tides.

Therefore, those safety issues would have to be addressed before any changes were made, he said.

Mr Wilcox was speaking after Nick Guillemette, president of the Guernsey Boatowners' Association, raised concerns about the safety of the new cruise ship passenger landing arrangements at the Albert Pier.

Deputy Barry Paint, a former marine pilot, is also lobbying for a review.

If moved back to the steps, Mr Wilcox said Travel Trident would still have to use the quay during low spring tides and if an increasing number of cruise ship passengers were also disembarking from there, as well as Isle of Sark Shipping, it could become heavily congested.

'But it is important to say Trident could, if the Harbour Office decided it wasn't working, whether that is to do with health and safety or whether there is a problem in St Peter Port, move back,' he added.

'Trident will go with the flow,' he added. 'We want to see everything working well and everyone happy.'
