Thunderstorms, wind and rain are expected to arrive this afternoon and bad weather is expected for the rest of the week.
Alderney Ferry Services confirmed yesterday that the weather had caused it to cancel sailings to Guernsey and Cherbourg for the rest of the week.
It said that all affected passengers had been emailed and would be refunded.
‘We apologise for the inconvenience caused, but your safety is important to us and being out in those conditions is just not possible. Everyone please do a calm weather dance for us, as this August has been one hell of a month of weather!’
Islands Unlimited, which operates the passenger sailings between Guernsey and Jersey, is also bracing for disruption, cancelling Thursday and Friday’s sailings.
‘As a responsible operator, your safety and comfort are our number one priorities and the forecast wave height exceeds the safe, permitted operating limit of the ship,’ the company said.
‘We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience. Regrettably, due to the extended period of adverse weather within the forecast at this time, we are unable to offer alternative travel options. All booking will be cancelled and any unused part of the booking will be refunded.’
Brittany Ferries still has all its sailings listed as operating, but only gives sailing updates up until the end of Thursday.
There is still more than a week until the States schools schools restart, with primary schools next Wednesday and the secondary schools next Thursday.
Islands Unlimited has extended its inter-island sailings until the beginning of November. Customers looking to travel between Guernsey and Jersey are able to book throughout October, with two rotations a day every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and one rotation every Sunday.
The last possible date to book is currently Sunday 2 November.
