The Liquor Licensing Ordinance 2006 means that on these two days consumption of alcohol on licensed premises is strictly prohibited after 2.30pm. People who residents at a hotel are not subject to this restriction in the hotel's restaurant.

Fleur du Jardin general manager Phil Leahy said many of his customers on Christmas Day were unaware of the law and were frustrated when it had to be enforced.

'To say people can't have any more drink when they are still eating their meal is not what they want to hear,' he said.

'It's annoying because people like to sit and have their meal at a leisurely pace but at half past two we have to go and take their wine off their table.'

Mr Leahy said that restaurants should be free to choose when they serve alcohol on Christmas Day and Good Friday.
