Islanders gather for welly-throwing challenge

IT MAY have been a little bit late, but the Herm New Year Challenge got the island's residents together on a chilly Sunday morning.

There have been many different challenges over the years, dating back to 2001 when the island's gardeners challenged some of the school children to build and race go-karts against them.

Since then, there have been beach games, archery and the ever-popular frisbee golf.

This year was the old favourite, 'welly wanging' –the simple act of throwing a wellington boot as far as possible.

The men's winner was James Hastings.

The winner for the women was Lucy Dobson-Jones, retaining her title from the last event.

In the children's event, it was a close thing between Brandon Hastings and Catrin Dobson-Jones, with Brandon eventually winning the 'throw-off' and being named the winner.

The winner in the under-fives contest was Charlie Moore.

The event was not just about the winners, but more geared towards having fun, getting together on a drizzly off-season morning, getting cold and wet and appreciating the cosiness of a lazy Sunday afternoon at home.
