Christine Guerin said she had seen on many occasions people standing outside the cafe door deciding whether or not to go in.

Ms Guerin decided Caritas was a worthy nomination for the RefCo-sponsored Welcome Award.

'They are also very hospitable to many people who, for one reason or another, may not be able to afford to treat themselves at a regular cafe and who are made to feel just as welcome as those who can, with no stigma attached.'

'If people have a problem, then he is always prepared to listen,' said Mr Ozanne, who has a learning disability.

'I do music with my befriender and when I needed somewhere to practise, and asked Richard about it, he said I could use Caritas on Tuesday evenings.'

The nomination period for all 12 Pride of Guernsey Awards remains open until 30 June. Forms appear in paper or visit our dedicated sister website www.prideofguernsey.com/nominate
