Pride of Guernsey: 'Health care staff may not realise they are valued'
THOSE working in health care do not realise how appreciated they are, the British Medical Association representative in the island has said, as he encouraged people to send in their nominations for the Pride of Guernsey Awards.
Dr Brian Parkin said the whole concept of the awards was a good idea, as it helped to recognise those who might not otherwise be acknowledged.
As well as the Angel of the Year Award, which celebrates doctors, nurses and medics,
Dr Parkin welcomed the accolades for Carer of the Year and for Emergency Hero of the Year – both categories where exceptional work in health care can also be marked.
'I think it is very important to try to recognise people who are working hard and perhaps in less-glamorous areas than others. I think there are a lot out there,' he said.
'Sometimes those that work in this area don't always fully realise how appreciated they are by people.
'In general, people who use services might understandably be quite anxious, and if staff can go out of their way to help them and just be nice, it really does go a long way.
'It makes a huge difference to people's general health and their recovery.'
The Angel of the Year Award acknowledges those who are at the very heart of the community, who dedicate their careers to looking after our wellbeing, often saving lives.
It recognises the work of those who provide a vital 24/7 service which can sometimes be carried out under extreme pressure, but always with calming reassurance and a caring smile.
If you know someone who deserves a special mention, complete one of the Pride of Guernsey forms that regularly appear in the paper and are available at several locations throughout the island, or you can nominate online at www.prideofguernsey.com.
Your nomination could also help them win a prize worth £1,000.
