Pride of Guernsey: 'Love, dedication and kindness'
A TEAM of six nurses who work within the Princess Elizabeth Hospital's oncology unit have been nominated for the Angel of the Year Award, sponsored by Ravenscroft.
Pamela Brehaut, one of those who nominated the team, said she could not pick out one of the nurses because all of them thoroughly deserve the award.
'The nurses who serve this department of the Princess Elizabeth Hospital are second to none,' she said.
'When first diagnosed and referred to the oncology ward, patients feel very alone and scared of the unknown but are soon helped to relax by the love, dedication and kindness of these nurses.
'They find time to talk and listen to patients and help in any way they can to make treatment as easy as possible.
'I nominate the nurses of the Bulstrode Oncology Unit because I think they thoroughly deserve this award.'
The six nurses currently serving the ward are Helen Robinson, Jane Killick, Charlotte Gleeson, Sue Freestone, Lucy Coggon and Jacqueline Domaille.
Rodney Benjamin also nominated the team.
'Guernsey's oncology nurses have created an extraordinary ambience,' he said.
'With so many folk in Guernsey being traumatised by cancer, Bulstrode House has an incredible atmosphere of normality and calm which is so helpful to many patients and carers.
'So often, they go the extra mile to help, inform and reassure patients – absolutely nothing is too much trouble for them.'
He said he had been under the care of Bulstrode House for over 12 years.
'I owe a substantial part of my survival and periodic good health to the unswerving and dedicated efforts of Guernsey's oncology nurses – truly a great team.'
