A FEAR of sharks made the Molokai Channel the most terrifying swim of Advocate Adrian Sarchet's life.

He completed it at 7.10pm on Monday in a time of 17 hours 25 minutes and nearly gave up after hour seven, but his crew persuaded him to keep going.

'I said last year that the North Channel was the hardest swim I had ever done, but the Molokai Channel beat it hands down.'

This is the fifth of the Oceans Seven swims Mr Sarchet has completed, having completed the English Channel in 2012, the Catalina Channel in California, the Strait of Gibraltar and then the North Channel in August last year. He has also swum around both Guernsey and Jersey.

He said a couple of days before this swim a video was posted on Facebook of Ranie Pearce's (American Channel swimmer) recent attempt of it, which was abandoned due to the persistent attentions of a shark.

While having done their research, his team could have done without seeing it so close to the swim, he said.
