Created in early June by Richard Vahey, a self-employed Guernsey resident of 41 years, the Good News Guernsey group already has nearly 4,000 members of all ages.
‘I thought we needed some positive news for a change,’ said Mr Vahey, who said he had been thinking about creating such a group for a while.
Mr Vahey said he experienced a decline in his mental health due to negative words and posts shared on other Facebook groups.
‘Users were being racist and homophobic,’ he said.
The new group works to be the opposite of groups that gather interest through negative news, with members of the community instead connecting positively with others they have never met before, giving advice, sharing stories and supporting one another.
‘I thought if the group got 50 members it would have been worth it,’ said Mr Vahey.
However, the group reached 50 members in its first three days and has continued to grow rapidly since.
‘The number now is fantastic, I check every few hours and it keeps going up,’ said Mr Vahey.
The group does not allow anything political or any complaints – it is all about positivity.
Even if it is just a photo of a flower to make someone smile.
Comments and posts can inspire people to do better things.
‘If we look at something positive, it can make us better and make Guernsey happier,' he said.
Mr Vahey believes the numbers of the group will constantly grow as more people engage and spread the word across the island.
‘If you look for happiness, you’ll find it,’ he said.
