The 18-year-old, who previously suffered from ME, was nominated for the College of Further Education-sponsored Overcoming Adversity Award by her year group head at Ladies' College and tutors.

When Becca was in Year 9 she was off school for six months, but overall it affected her for 18 months.

Despite that, she gained her pilot's licence on her 17th birthday – the minimum age for a licence – and at the time was the youngest pilot in the country.

She was given the all clear and Becca, who has just finished Year 13, hopes to go to the Royal Holloway University to study psychology and criminology.

Her nominators said she was an inspiration to others.

'As well as a fantastic set of GCSE and AS examinations, Rebecca is a good-natured, perceptive young lady who, although naturally gifted, does not take this for granted.

'She always uses her talents to benefit those around her.'

The nominators said that this year she captained a school house and led them to victory on numerous occasions.

'She's never afraid to get stuck in and always leads by example.'

The nominators said achievements of this nature, despite health difficulties earlier in life, were worth celebrating.

'Yet, given all of her achievements over the years, she is refreshingly modest and understated.'
