Pride of Guernsey: 'They are the centre of the family'
NOTHING is ever too much trouble for grandparents Ron and Bridie Harnden, who have been described as the rock of their large and close family.
The couple, aged 82 and 84 respectively, moved to the island 55 years ago and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
They were nominated for the Grandparent/s of the Year Award, sponsored by The Channel Islands Co-operative Society, by their granddaughter Emma Clayton.
She said many people would remember Ron working at the Royal Bank of Scotland or spot him running around L'Ancresse four times a week.
The couple have eight children, 25 grandchildren and six great-granddaughters.
'They have a very special relationship with each and every one of them,' Emma said. 'They are the centre of the family, their home is full of memories of us all being there and we all count ourselves extremely lucky to have them in our lives.
'Nothing is too much trouble, all are welcome at any time and granny particularly likes a girly chat when grandad is out of earshot.
'Ron and Bridie deserve to be recognised in all of our eyes. We want to put them first, as they have always done for us.'
