Rising marina costs a major concern for boat owners

IMPROVEMENTS made to the island's marinas need to be balanced against keeping costs for boat owners low, the harbour master has said following the results of a wide-ranging survey into leisure boating.

Captain Chad Murray said there was a need to recognise 'the high economic value' of the boating community and it would listen to concerns about costs.

The survey, set up by Guernsey Harbours, in conjunction with the Guernsey Marine Traders Association and the Guernsey Boatowners' Association, was completed by more than 600 people and questioned leisure boat owners on factors including customer service, mooring fees and economy impact.

Among the stand-out responses, 78% of boat owners felt they were well served by the local marine trade industry, while 85% of respondents felt they had been inconvenienced by the removal of hose pipes for health and safety reasons.

Captain Murray said the feedback would be used to inform development plans, and said he was 'confident the results were representative of the boating community'.

'We've received some clear guidance that cost, particularly mooring fees, is a pressing issue for some of the boat-owning community, so clearly any improvements we make must be balanced against the need to keep costs for our customers low.

'In some instances we've been given a clear steer on specific issues, for example that the removal of hose pipes for health and safety reasons has been an inconvenience to boat owners, so we are already looking into ways we can re-instate them safely and cost-effectively.

'Our survey shows that boat owners spend more than £3,000 a year on maintenance and equipment alone, with more than £13m. being spent with Guernsey businesses.

'Clearly boat owners make a considerable contribution to Guernsey's economy, as well as being an important part of our island's cultural identity.'
