Football fans get a look at top-flight trophies

Football fans had the rare opportunity to view the Premier League and Barclays WSL trophies yesterday on the first of a two-day visit to the island.

The trophies were on display in Barclays' St Peter Port branch in St Julian’s Avenue yesterday, with a steady stream of people visiting throughout the day to have their pictures taken with two iconic symbols of sport.

‘It’s amazing, they are attracting lots of different people, and it’s really special because we don’t get them in Guernsey or in the Channel Islands that often,’ said Louis Sheppard, Barclays’ head of local markets for Guernsey.

The Premier League has grown into the most-watched football league in the world, followed by billions of fans across more than 200 countries, while the Barclays WSL is the highest level of professional women’s football in England, showcasing some of the world’s top talent and fastest-growing clubs.

Fans could find out more about the history of the trophies for the two top-flight competitions. The 25kg Premier League trophy has been won by seven different clubs in 34 years, with Manchester United having lifted it the most times with 13 titles, and it is currently adorned with red and white ribbons as Arsenal won it for the fourth time this season.

The WSL trophy currently has blue ribbons hanging from it as Manchester City are this season’s WSL champions. The league was established in 2010 and the current trophy design was unveiled ahead of the 2022-23 season. Manchester United captain Maya Le Tissier aspires to lift it at some point in her career.

The trophies will be back on display today at Guernsey’s home of football Victoria Park – where Barclays is a founding partner – where they will take centre stage at a youth six-a-side tournament.

The free event, running from 9.30am to 4pm, will welcome club teams from across the island, creating an inclusive and memorable experience for young players, coaches, and families to engage and have photographs taken with the trophies.

‘The opportunity is centred around the children’s football tournament and there will be a lot of children there and their families and coaches to see the trophies,’ said Mr Sheppard.
