The fare has been brought to light by a regular taxi user, who wishes to remain anonymous, who said he discovered the charge when he tried to book a cab to pick him up when he returned to the island.

He said he was told that the drivers had got together and decided to charge a premium rate of £17 for ordered airport taxis, irrespective of how far the passenger wanted to go.

‘They already charge more than a London taxi. I think this is extortionate,’ said the man, who found an alternative method of transport for that trip.

He said he had made similar bookings previously, but this was the first time he had been told there would be a fixed rate for the pick-up.

‘It sounds like he’s talking about a corporate rate,’ said Taxi Owners’ Federation president Leon Gallienne, when asked about the fare. ‘We meet people at the airport and so agree a price.’

He said that the practice was not new. ‘It’s something that’s been going on for a number of years and it’s not gone up.’

Charges are down to the individual taxi company and on some occasions it can be less. ‘Normally the rate is around £17,’ said Mr Gallienne.
