Island’s flexibility key to South African investors

BUSINESS links between Guernsey and South Africa have significant growth potential, according to Guernsey finance professionals with experience in the region.

Guernsey Finance organised a delegation to Cape Town to update the financial services industry there on the potential the island could offer, particularly in investment funds.

South African pension funds are allowed to place a quarter of their investments outside the country, and so offshore funds could complement South African investments, said Christopher Jehan, managing director of Midshore Consulting and vice-chairman of the Guernsey Investment Fund Association, who was part of the delegation.

He said that the island’s flexibility was a key factor for South African investors.

Collas Crill group partner and head of corporate and commercial Paul Wilkes said that the island sat in the middle internationally in terms of regulation.

‘Guernsey can be seen as offering a third option regarding regulation, namely somewhere in the middle,’ he said.

‘Guernsey offers investors the choice of not being tied up in red tape, yet having corporate governance oversight.’
