The transfer station, which is due to open later this year, will process waste from households and businesses prior to being exported for energy recovery or recycling. It will have capacity for up 26,000 tonnes a year of residual waste, as well as 4,000 tonnes of food and 2,500 tonnes of glass.
A spokesperson for States of Guernsey Trading Assets said:
‘Construction is being carried out by local firm Geomarine, on behalf of main contractor Amec Foster Wheeler.
The concrete supporting base for the main frame and the floor of the new building were completed in December. The steelwork arrived on site this week, having been specially manufactured to the required dimensions for each section. Two specialist cranes have been brought to the island to lift these into place.
